Tomato Chutney

A simple Tomato chutney that goes well with dosa, idli and even rice. I love this tangy tomato chutney. I don’t like the normal coconut chutney with idli or dosa and prefer this chutney.

This chutney tastes great with rice and you can use this in the absence of curries. It is easy to prepare. This chutney is often prepared at my Mom’s home. Seasoning with mustard seeds and asafoetida adds a flavor to it and makes your Tomato chutney look mouth-watering.


¼ cup finely chopped coconut

2 or 3 tomatoes

4 or 5 red chillies

5 pods of garlic

1/2 inch ginger



½ tsp mustard seeds

¼ tsp urad dal

5 or 6 curry leaves

Asafoetida a pinch

1tbsp Oil


Boil the tomatoes for 5 mins and remove the outer skin. Grind cooled tomatoes along with all other ingredients.  Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard, once it starts spluttering, add urad dal as it starts turning brown, add curry leaves and asafetida. Switch off the stove. Add this to the tomato chutney.
