Dal Palak

I always look out for simple quick and easy recipe’s which should be tasty and healthy too. My kid’s make a fuss when it comes to green leafy vegetables and I had to make them eat palak(spinach) which is packed with vital vitamins, minerals, nutrients such as iron and beta-carotene, and is a good source of fiber. I came across a simple and easy recipe from Archana’s Kitchen and gave it a try.

Dal palak tasted good with rice and is mild as our family prefers. It won my kid’s heart too. A sure thumbs up recipe for me.



Yellow moong dal – 1/2 cup
Masoor dal or toor dal – 1/2 cup
Spinach, chopped and steamed – 250 grams or 3 bunches
1 large tomato, finely chopped
An inch piece of ginger, grated
Green chillies – 2 or more according to your taste
Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
Garam masala powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste


Ghee – 1 tblsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Whole dry red chillies – 1 or 2



First cook the dals in 3 cups of water using a pressure cooker. keep it aside. Take a pan and add a tsp of oil and once it’s heated add chopped tomatoes, grated ginger, green chillies, turmeric powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder, spinach and salt to it. Stir and cook covered till the spinach gets rightly cooked not over cooked.

Next step would be to add the cooked dals to the spinach and stir it. Bring dal palak to boil and switch off the stove. Finally heat a tablesppon of ghee in a saucepan and add cumin seeds and dry red chillies. Add this seasoning to dal palak and give it a stir.

It goes well with rice, parathas and chapathis.


Add green chillies according to your taste.
I added more water to dal palak so it would suit with rice. Water measurements can be varied.
